Description

Primary Purpose:

Provide nursing care to students who have special health needs and require additional services. 

Help meet physical and instructional needs of individual students with disabilities inside and outside classroom. Assist with the implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEP), including self-help, behavior management, and instruction programs. Work under general supervision of principal and immediate direction of certified teacher.

 

Qualifications:

    

     Education /Certification:

     Graduate of an accredited vocational nursing program.

     Valid Texas Vocational Nurse License.

     

AND 

 

    Associate’s degree, two years of study at an institution of higher learning, or have met formal academic assessment as          required by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA)

    Valid Texas educational aide certificate

    

 

     Special Knowledge/Skills:

     Knowledge of specialized equipment to be used for classroom and child specific needs.

     Ability to operate office machines and equipment including computer.  

     Ability to work with children with disabilities. 

 

     Experience:

     Pediatric or community health experience preferred and two years experience working with children

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

 

Under supervision of the R.N.:

 

 1.  Administer student treatments, medications and procedures as ordered by physician.

 2.  Provide skilled nursing assessment of student health needs and make nursing interventions 

      as appropriate for children who may have a narrow margin of relative wellness.

 3.  Communicate effectively with parents, other staff members and physician regarding student  

      needs.

 4.  Maintain records according to district policy reflecting care given as well as SHARS billing as

      applicable.

 

Independent Activities:

 

 5.   Maintain and implement knowledge of all BON, TEA and district rules, regulations, policies,

       procedures, guidelines, and laws to ensure compliance in all work practices.

 6.   Attend educational seminars pertinent to current job.

 7.   Maintain positive working relationship with students, families, and co-workers to ensure

       coordinated workflow and timely and appropriate treatment.

 8.   Ensure that appropriate supplies/materials are available for patient care.

 9.   Assist with student personal care needs, including diapering as needed.

10.  Other duties as assigned.

11.  Maintain confidentiality.

12.  Help meet the individual needs of student(s) including transferring to and from wheelchairs; lifting and positioning;                 interpreting instructions; and assisting with physical needs and personal care such as feeding, bathroom needs, and               personal hygiene. 

 

Help manage the behavior of assigned student(s). This includes intervening in crisis situations and restraining disruptive or dangerous student as needed. Recognize differences in student’s special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs and adapt methods and interaction according. Work with assigned student(s) or small groups to develop motor skills and conduct instructional exercises assigned by teacher. Assist assigned students throughout school day, inside and outside classroom. This includes lunchroom, bus, and playground duty. Keep teacher informed of special needs or problems of assigned student(s).

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

     None.

 

Equipment Used:

 

Thermometer, sphygmomanometer, otoscope, oxygen, ambu-bag, epi-pen, peak flow meter, nebulizer, pulse oximeter, suction machine, Kangaroo pump for feeding tubes, glucometer, personal computer, copier, fax.

Ability to communicate effectively(verbal and written); interpret policies and procedures; maintain emotional control under stress. Exposure to bacteria, communicable diseases, and blood borne pathogens.
